Diagnostic Imaging earns ACR accreditation for CT (CAT) scan

18-Jul-2011

Memorial Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in computed tomography (CT) as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). CT scanning — sometimes called CAT scanning — is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and tailor treatments for various medical conditions. Memorial Hospital has Fremont’s only accredited CT machine.

 Nathan Perkins
Nathan Perkins, Memorial Hospital diagnostic imaging director sees great value in this accreditation.

“Achieving a high quality diagnostic CT scan helps the hospital in a number of important ways in regards to efficiency, patient care, and patient safety,” he said. “Knowing that we are accredited by the ACR assures Memorial’s patients that this facility meets the standards for radiation safety and image quality.”

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after an evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.

Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

According to Perkins, “Earning this accreditation for the hospital is a testament to the diagnostic imaging department’s commitment to quality patient care.”

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

Memorial Hospital has service Sandusky County and neighboring communities since 1918. It is a 186 licensed-bed hospital that provides inpatient and outpatient services. In addition to diagnostic imaging services, such as CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and digital mammography, Memorial Hospital provides surgery, intensive care, emergency care, rehabilitation services, mental health services, hospice care and much more.
